Janry Ubas finally wins his 1st SEA Games gold after 5 tries in 8 years

MANILA, Philippines – A veteran of Philippine athletics, Janry Ubas finally bagged his first-ever SEA Games gold after over 8 years of trying. Ubas won his elusive gold medal in the individual men’s long jump event at the 32nd Southeast Asian Games at the Morodok Techo National Stadium on Tuesday, May 9.

After four consecutive misses, the 29-year-old competitor from Villanueva, Misamis Oriental achieved a distance of 7.85 meters on his first attempt, which turned out to be the winning jump for him. “I could have jumped longer if not for those fouls. But I couldn’t ask for more. This is my first SEA Games gold after five attempts,’’ Ubas said.

Ubas also brought home a silver medal in the men’s decathlon final at the 32nd SEA Games on Wednesday, May 10.



His victory came after five attempts since he began representing the Philippines in the SEA Games in 2015. Ubas has been through several heartbreaks to reach his elusive gold, but he was determined and persevered to continue. In 2021 and 2019, he was almost there when he bagged silver medals. In 2017, he settled for bronze.

It was a long time coming for Ubas, but all his hard work paid off with his first SEA Games gold!

Ubas’ gold was the Philippine team’s 23rd gold in the 32nd SEA Games. According to the medal tally of the Philippine Sports Commission, the country now has 25 golds.
